Following the counting of votes, Masoud Mezikian was elected president of Iran by winning the majority of votes and defeating Saeed Jalili.
According to the announcement by Iranian Interior Ministry Masoud Mezikian, the reformist-backed candidate managed to win 16,384,403 votes out of more than 30,530,000 votes cast in the second round of the Iranian presidential election.
Thus, after defeating Saeed Jalili (13.5 million votes), the candidate supported by fundamentalists became elected president of Iran.
According to the Iranian Interior Ministry's announcement, just over 30 million people, or 49.8% of eligible voters, participated in the second round of elections. In the first round of this election, the participation rate was announced at 40%, Masoud Bizikian having won 10,415,000 votes (42.45%) and Saeed Jalili winning 9,473,000 votes (38.61%) against the other two candidates, namely Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and. Mustafa Pourmohammadi won, but as none of them managed to win more than 50% of the votes, they reached the second round.
